Project GoldenThunder

Project GoldenThunder — a proposed nationwide tree-growing programme across Kenya’s 47 counties, working towards 50 million trees through phased planting and long-term care.

Four separate measures

Seedlings produced

—

No verified records yet

Raised in nurseries and counted at the nursery.

Seedlings delivered

—

No verified records yet

Received and accepted at an approved site.

Trees planted

—

No verified records yet

New trees in the ground, with evidence. Shown as provisional until possible duplicates are reviewed; the verified total is shown separately. Replacements are reported separately.

Trees surviving

—

No verified records yet

Reported per site, cohort and check horizon, with coverage, date, tree age and whether counted or estimated from a sample. Never summed into a single national figure.

Intended coverage: all 47 counties

County delivery targets are not set. Each county’s target will follow suitable sites, species, seedlings, funding, caretakers and demonstrated capacity. Any 5–10-year horizon is provisional and will be confirmed only from demonstrated capacity.

Proposed stages

Proposed

Demonstration

50,000 trees at 5 approved sites, to test consent, nursery supply, transport, planting, records and early survival.

Proposed

Phased expansion

Further phases county by county, only when the conditions for expansion are met. Phase sizes and timing are not yet set.

Proposed

Long-term care

Named caretakers, watering, protection and survival checks for 36 months after each planting.

Demonstration nursery plan, counted back from planting

50,000 trees needs 123,532 seeds sown and 63,001 seedlings raised, including the replacement reserve. Days counted back from the first demonstration planting day (date not set). Sowing date depends on species; the range uses the lead-time assumption.

People for the demonstration

Planters on a planting day are one part of the workforce. Nursery staff, drivers, water crews and caretakers are additional and are not costed here. Seedling flow from seed to planting, applying each loss once: Seeds sown 112,302; Seedlings germinated 67,381; Seedlings produced (dispatch size) 57,274; Seedlings dispatched (quality-passed) 51,546; Seedlings received and planted 50,000.

  2. 180 days beforeSow 123,532 seeds by this point at the central lead time (180 days), including the replacement reserve.
  3. 90 days beforeLatest sowing for fast species (lead time 90 days).
  4. 60 days beforeSite preparation starts: 14 pitting workers a day for 60 days.
  5. 14 days beforeQuality check: 51,546 seedlings must pass from 57,274 produced.
  6. 2 days beforeDispatch begins; each receipt recorded against its batch and site.
  7. Planting dayPlanting: 40 planters and 2 supervisors a day for 5 days.

Demonstration first (proposed)

50,000 trees at 5 approved sites over 5 days. Test consent, nursery supply, transport, planting rates, records and 3-month survival before any national scale-up.

Conditions before each expansion phase

  • Demonstration records complete: every planting traceable to an approved site, a received batch and a named team.
  • Land consent and approvals on file for every site in the next phase.
  • Survival at 3 months at or above a threshold the Founder sets. No threshold has been set; 80% appears in the drafts only as a figure for discussion and is not a standard.
  • Verified nursery supply for the full next phase, by species, before planting starts.
  • Named caretakers in place for every site for the full aftercare period.
  • Restricted funding received (not just pledged) for planting AND aftercare of the next phase.
  • Measured cost per surviving tree within the approved budget.
  • Duplicate records resolved and replacements reported separately.

Sponsorship amounts are set only after quotations, as a cost per surviving tree. A pledge is never reported as secured funding until it is signed and received.

Nursery batch

Seed, nursery inputs and labour for a numbered batch.

Reported as: Seedlings produced and quality-passed for that batch.

Site

Site preparation and planting at one named, approved site.

Reported as: Trees planted at that site, with evidence.

Caretaking

Named caretakers, watering and protection for the aftercare period.

Reported as: Trees surviving at each scheduled check.

Monitoring and reporting

Survival checks, mapping and independent verification.

Reported as: Verified survival reports.

General project

Coordination, safety, training and logistics across sites.

Reported as: Project-level measures.
